Review: Stereophonics @ Leeds Arena

Since being an innocent 15 year old in 1999, when Performance and Cocktails was released, I have been a fan of Stereophonics and it was where my love for Mr Kelly Jones began.

Nearly 17 years later and three Stereophonic gigs later, I’m still a huge fan and the lads didn’t disappoint at Leeds First Direct Arena last night. If i’m honest, I’m a much bigger fan of their earlier albums like Word Gets Around and Performance and Cocktails however there is a few songs from each of the albums that followed that I enjoy also. Lucky for me, there was a complete mixture of songs on the setlist, from WGA right through to their new album (and title of the tour) Keep the Village Alive.

A favourite from last night for me had to be a very chilled ‘Traffic” with a lone Kelly Jones. His amazing raspy voice filled the Arena and held our attention despite being one man and a guitar. The sign of the very talented singer and performer. I also loved Local Boy in The Photograph and Bartender and the Thief which took me back to my teens when I’d walked around Wakefield with it playing on my minidisc player. I’d not really listened to the new album much but it’s made me want to listen to it more as songs such as C’est La Vie and Song for the Summer gave me goosebumps.

Obviously, I spent the majority of the night swooning over Kelly Jones who remains a consistent feature in my “Top 5 Laminated List” and there was a magic moment where he kicked his microphone stand over, very Rock ‘n’ Roll of him. I can’t remember which song it was but it built slowly throughout the track yet the sound wasn’t right towards the end and the mix of loud guitars, drums, piano etc drown out Kelly’s voice and he knew that. Hence the kick of the microphone. It showed the audience that he was passionate about doing a good job for the audience and I loved it.

If you haven’t listened to Stereophonics or seen them live, i suggest you do. You won’t be disappointed!

I have to say it was lovely to have a night out that took me away from my mummy life for a few hours 🙂

  1. Oh yes…now this is my kind of blogpost!! I LOVE the Stereophonics…reckon I’ve seen them four times in concert (once by accident when I got tickets to watch the Friday night project and they were the guest band)…so I am so so with you on the Kelly Jones Crush! Their Music was the soundtrack to my late teens…Performance and cocktails was played on loop in our 6th form common room. If you ever need a blogger to review a ‘phonics gig with, I’m your girl 😉
