Review: Happy Halloween with Baker Days

Since beginning my blog over a year ago, one of the things I hoped for was that I would be able to collaborate with businesses to promote their amazing products. Therefore, when Baker Days contacted me to ask if I would like to receive a “Letter Box Cake” and review it, obviously I was delighted.

Cake…through my letterbox – an ingenious idea!
I took my time browsing through their lovely website, getting more hungry by the second as I looks through designs for birthdays, Christmas, new babies, and any other occasion you can think of!
I had a brain wave while browsing…I was hosting a Halloween party for the toddlers so why not order a cake for that? I’m not the best person at making decisions but I finally settled on the Dawn of the Dead skull cake.

Picture is from the Baker Days website – I don’t know a Theresa!

It was colourful and not too scary for the under 2’s. Then came another decision – what sort of cake? Luckily that was easy as I was reviewing the 5inch LetterBox cake (RRP £14.99) however they also give the option of small (10-12 portions), medium (18-25portions) and large (40-55portions and a free helium balloon!) cakes.
Following this, the most difficult decision, what flavour did I want?! I’m inclined to go for a Victoria sponge style usually but as this cake was only one layer, the vanilla sponge wouldn’t have any jam or cream (and I love that bit), I don’t really like fruit cake and I’m not glutton or diary intolerant so, by process of elimination it was the chocolate chip sponge cake that seemed most appropriate – oh the hardship 😌 oh and it’s made with Belgium chocolate – nom nom nom!
When the box arrived through my letterbox the day before the party I was very excited! Enclosed in the box was a simple tin with the cake in and a little bag with balloons and candles, a nice extra added touch! I hid the box away until party time, fearing that if my husband got hold of it, it would be devoured in a flash.

On the afternoon of our Toddler Halloween Party, the cake sat proudly on my buffet table amongst the other spooky goodies. Everyone commented on how cute and well presented it was! Due to there being ten toddlers at the party, I cut the cake into smaller “tester” portions for people to try, including myself. I managed to get about 8 small portions out of it, only bite size but enough to sample the moist, chocolatey, soft goodness underneath the icing…it was heaven!

Little L shoved his piece in his mouth and it was gone in an instant. His response? “More please Mummy!” which, from a two year old, is high praise indeed!
Everything about the service from Baker Days has been professional and friendly, they couldn’t do enough to accommodate my needs with regard to the cake being delivered for my party and advised me on how long it would last too…not that it was an issue as it barely survived an hour, thanks to the hungry toddlers and parents!
I love the idea of this letterbox cake and it’s just as good in reality. Instead of sending a card to someone, to say “hi” or “love you” or “thinking of you” or just to cheer them up, a letter box cake is the perfect alternative and I’ll definitely be looking to order one in the future! You can find Baker Days on Facebook and Twitter, as well as their website, why not treat yourself, or someone you love, to a lovely, tasty surprise.
